Star Wars may be one of the most beloved franchises in the history of franchises, but it’s not without its fair share of plot holes and inconsistencies. Over the course of four decades and a number of films, TV shows and spinoffs, this Saga has painted itself into a creative corner more than once, resulting in a few less than satisfactory answers and solutions.

After A New Hope, things got messy when Star Wars creator George Lucas decided to play with the mythology. The decision to make Darth Vader Luke’s father was inspired, but seemed to contradict many of the statements made about the character in A New Hope. Likewise, the decision to make Luke and Leia brother and sister seemed forced and, in retrospect, super icky. While the Death Star seemed like a good idea in theory, after the first one was destroyed, you’d think the bad guys would concoct a new plan instead of reusing the same ideas over and over again. It also seems a bit silly that Darth Vader, arguably the most powerful Force-user that has ever lived, would be incapable of recognizing his own daughter sitting right in front of him.

Other inconsistencies abound too, such as Emperor Palpatine’s plan to bring about the destruction of the Rebellion, the confusion behind Parsecs and Midichlorians and why Vader would disable the Millenium Falcon’s hyperdrive at Cloud City when he could have just disabled the entire ship?
